Michelia figo
(Banana Shrub)
Extremely rare shrub. Michelia is a broadleaf evergreen 20-foot-tall shrub
from SE China, and is cultivated for its richly aromatic floral perfume. From
April or May until late into autumn, the shrub produces one flower after another.
They are rich creamy cream on the outside, the inside similar yet heavily
mottled edges with rich maroon. It's rich, floral fragrance is glorious.
When the atmosphere is ideal the fragrance is noticed 50 feet away. A single
flower put in a bowl of water will scent an entire room. In the North it
has been prized as a greenhouse subject.
Hardy in zone 8 or to -12 C.
Recommended care:
Full sun to part shade in well drained, fertile soil. Rarely if ever bothered
by pests or diseases. Can easily be pruned to be kept any any desirable height
and width. If planted outdoors mulch well and plant in a sheltered
location.
