Lapageria rosea
(Chilean Bellflower)
An extremely rare climber for serious collectors. One of the rarest vines
in the world also the hardest to propagate. It is a evergreen twining vine
which has red waxy, oblong bell-shaped flowers up to 3.5 inches long. Grows
up to 15 feet tall. This is an extremely slow growing vine. Well worth growing
for the rarity and the incredible flowers.
Hardy in zones 9-10.
Recommended care:
Only water with rain water or let tap water stand for 24 hours before watering.
Must have lime free, moist, well drained soil. Incorporate bark or some sand
into the soil mix. Never disturb the root ball of this plant. In summer must
be kept in full shade or very light sun otherwise the leaves will bleach.
Apply water based fertilizer monthly. Let dry out between waterings in winter.
In Spring put outdoors after all chances of frost have gone, in fall bring
indoors before all chances of frost come.
