Koelreuteria paniculata
(Golden
Rain Tree)
One
of the showiest trees! A fast growing, deciduous tree to about 30' with compound
leaves, giving an overall lacy appearance. The striking 1' clusters
of showy yellow flowers bloom all summer. These are followed by 2" red-purple
seed pods, which are equally stunning. The fruit is a papery three compartment
structure which is full of seeds. The pods turns scarlet red in fall. The
bark is even ornamental for winter interest as it becomes furrowed and is
light gray-brown. Good as a small shade tree where space is limited. Under
used as a street and park tree.
Hardy
in zones 5-9.
Recommended care:
Quite
adaptable as to soil conditions. Would prefer loose, well drained soil and
good watering, especially when young. Tolerates drought, alkaline soil, heat,
wind, and pollution. Prune as needed during winter when dormant. Good sun
required for best flowering and fruiting.
