Echium
pininana
Extremely rare sub shrub form the Canary Islands. Rosette forming biennial
or short lived perennial with rough silver hairy leaves 3" long. Monocarpic.
In summer each rosette produces a panicle 5' -12' tall long of funnel shaped
blue or sometimes pink flowers with large brats. Up to 12' tall 3' wide.
Hardy in zones 8-10.
Recommended care:
If you are in zone 8 plant in a sheltered location away from strong winds.
Plant out 2nd year, flowers 2-3 years from seed. Plant in full sun to part
shade in well drained soil. Mulch well in fall or cover with remay or burlap
in really cool temperatures.
